Ilie Daniel Popescu (born June 1, 1983 in Reșița ) is a former Romanian artistic gymnast .

He was a wrestler in his childhood before he decided to do gymnastics. His special device was initially the pommel horse , on which he also became Junior European Champion in Germany in 2000. A year later he was accepted into the national team.

In 2004 Popescu took part in the Olympic Games in Athens, where he won the bronze medal with the Romanian gymnastics team. At the European Gymnastics Championships in 2005 , he came fifth on the pommel horse. In 2006 he was runner-up with the team at the European Championships and at the World Championships in the same year, the Romanians barely missed the medal position with fourth place.

In 2007 Popescu achieved his best international single placement. At the world championships in Stuttgart he was vice world champion in jumping behind Leszek Blanik from Poland . He finished eighth with the team. At the European Gymnastics Championships in 2008 Popescu won bronze twice, in the jump and with the team. He also took part in his second Olympic Games in Beijing that year , in which the Romanian team finished seventh. In 2009 he reached three finals at the European Championships . He was fifth on parallel bars and jumping and seventh on pommel horse.

Daniel Popescu studied sport at the University of Bacău and went to Germany to join the TV Wetzgau in 2010 . He started for the Bundesliga team, with which he became German team champion in 2013 , and also worked as a coach. In 2014 he became a coach in Salerno (Italy). In 2016 Popescu, who has meanwhile also acquired German citizenship, returned to Germany and became a trainer in Ulm.
