Danielle de Niese (born April 11, 1979 in Melbourne , Australia) is an Australian opera singer (soprano). She made her debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1998 at the age of 19 . De Niese has become a star in the opera world. She was best known for roles from baroque operas, such as B. by Georg Friedrich Händel and Jean-Philippe Rameau . De Niese lives in the USA.

Life

Origin and education

Danielle de Niese's parents come from Sri Lanka , but her father also had Dutch ancestors. They emigrated to Australia , where their daughter Danielle was born. De Niese began taking singing lessons at the age of eight . When she was ten years old, her family went to the United States and settled in Los Angeles . There she attended the Colburn School , where she was taught acting, dance, singing and instrumental music.

As a teenager, Danielle de Niese hosted a show for teenagers on a local TV station for several years, introducing them to classical music and culture. She was awarded an Emmy for her performance as a presenter .

In 1998, at the age of 18, de Niese was accepted into the Lindemann Young Artists Program of the New York Metropolitan Opera . Barely a year later she made her debut in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in the role of Barbarina.

Career

After the debut in New York, engagements at various American opera houses followed, such as in Santa Fe and Los Angeles. In 2004 de Niese sang Cleopatra in Handel's Giulio Cesare at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam and at the Paris Opera both under the direction of Marc Minkowski . In the same role, the young singer excelled in 2005 at the Glyndebourne Festival in the award-winning production by David McVicar. Glyndebourne was the big break for Danielle de Niese. Since then she has been considered one of the best singers of Handel's works by critics and audiences alike.

This was followed by further appearances in Paris in Les Indes Galantes by Rameau under the direction of William Christies . At the Teatro San Carlo in Naples de Niese made her Italian debut in a performance of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice for the Teatro San Carlo. In Zurich, the singer took on the role of Poppea for the first time in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt . De Niese was also successful in this role at the Chicago Opera Theater . This was followed by a production of Handel's Rodelinda with the Canadian Opera Company, in which de Niese sang the title role.

In autumn 2006, de Niese returned to the Nederlandse Opera and was successful there in the role of Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro). At the beginning of 2007, de Niese was heard as Ginevra in Handel's Ariodante at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris . In the same year as in 2008, de Niese appeared again at the Glyndebourne Festival, once in the role of Cleopatra and this year in a new production by L'incoronazione di Poppea . In 2009 de Niese was engaged in the role of Galatea in Handel's Acis and Galatea at London's Royal Opera House . In September 2015 she was heard as a soloist on the BBC Last Night of The Proms in London.
