Danilo Blanuša (born December 7, 1903 in Osijek , † August 8, 1987 ) was a Yugoslav mathematician, physicist and engineer. He was a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Zagreb .

He went to school in Vienna , Steyr , Osijek and Zagreb and studied electrical engineering in Zagreb and Vienna as well as mathematics and physics. In 1943 he defended his dissertation "Jedna vrst integralnih teorema Besselovih funkcija" ("A kind of integral theorem about the Bessel function") at the Technical Faculty in Zagreb.

In 1946 he discovered the first snarks after Julius Petersen in 1898. These are special cubic graphs whose edges cannot be colored with three colors in such a way that no two edges at a node have the same color. According to Peter Guthrie Tait , the four-color problem can be traced back to the question of the existence of planar snarks. Other snarks were then discovered by Blanche Descartes , among others .

He also dealt with differential geometry ( isometric immersions of the two-dimensional hyperbolic plane in the six-dimensional Euclidean space) and Bessel functions .

In 1947 he corrected the treatment of relativistic thermodynamics by Max Planck from 1908 (how independent Heinrich Ott 1963, to whom this correction was usually attributed). This applies in particular to the relativistic transformation factor of heat and temperature. But the topic was still controversial afterwards.

In 1960 he received the Ruder Boskovic Prize.
