The Danjiangkou Dam ( 丹江口 水利 枢纽 工程 , Danjiangkou shuili shuniu gongcheng  - "Danjiangkou key project for hydraulic engineering") is a so-called key project for Chinese hydraulic engineering in Danjiangkou in Hubei Province , which began in 1958 and was completed in 1974 . The dam is located on the upper reaches of the Han Jiang (a left tributary of the Yangtze River ) and on its largest tributary Dan Jiang ( 丹江 ). The reservoir has a storage capacity of 29.05 billion cubic meters (before the increase, 20.89 billion m³). The height of the gravity dam has been 176.6 meters since 2009 (162 m before the elevation). In addition to locks, there is also a ship lift with a lifting height of 50 m for ships up to 450 t.

The connected hydropower plant has a nominal output of 900 MW.

For the south-north water transfer project , the dam wall was increased by around 15 meters between 2005 and 2009 and the capacity increased by 11.6 to 29.05 billion cubic meters. 330,000 people were relocated.
