The Dannebrog Islands are a group of islands and rocks off the Graham Coast in western Graham Land . They are between the Wauwermans Islands and the Vedel Islands in the Wilhelm Archipelago . The group includes Elizabeth Island and Rollet Island .
The German polar explorer Eduard Dallmann discovered and named the Wilhelm Archipelago in 1874. Another sighting took place by the Belgica expedition (1897-1899) under the direction of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery . He renamed the archipelago in [sic!] Îles Danebrog . With the name after the flag of Denmark ( Danish Dannebrog ) he wanted to remember the support of the Scandinavian country for his expedition. Dallmann's name of the archipelago was retained and de Gerlache's name was transferred to the archipelago described here.
