Danny Ortiz (born July 26, 1976 in Las Palmas , † February 29, 2004 in Guatemala City ) was a Guatemalan football player .
Career
society
Ortiz learned the ABC of football in various youth clubs in Guatemala. His professional career began in 1998 at CD Suchitepéquez . After two years he moved to league competitor Deportivo Carchá . In 2001 he switched to the top Guatemalan club CSD Comunicaciones , and a year later he signed with the other top club CSD Municipal . With Municipal he won the 2002 Clausura Championship straight away. The following year he won the Apertura title. On February 29, 2004, at a game of his club CSD Municipal against CSD Comunicaciones , the goalkeeper suffered a tear in the heart sac after a collision with the opposing striker Mario Rafael Rodríguez and died from it in hospital.
National team
Ortiz played as a goalkeeper in the Guatemalan national soccer team . In February 2001 he made his debut in the friendly against Panama , making his debut for the colors of his country. Shortly afterwards he was in the squad for the Central American Cup , in which Guatemala could win the title. The following year Ortiz was in the line-up for the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup , where he was number two in the team of national coach Julio César Cortés behind Edgar Estrada . After the 3-1 defeat in the opening match, Ortiz was in the starting line-up of his team in the second and final group game against El Salvador . The game was lost 0-1 and Guatemala was eliminated from the tournament. Until his death in 2004 he was regularly appointed to the national team.
