The Dansville and Mount Morris Railroad ( AAR reporting as mark: DMM) was an American class 3 local railroad - railway company in the northwest of the State of New York . The company continues to exist as a largely inactive subsidiary ( non-operating subsidiary ) of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W). The remaining 12.5 km part of the DMM line is operated today by the Rochester & Southern Railroad (RSR), which belongs to the G&W group of companies, for rail freight transport.

history

Dansville tried in the middle of the 19th century for a rail connection, since the importance of the branch canal of the Genesee Valley Canal , which ended in Dansville, waned with the rail connection of neighboring towns. In 1868, the Erie and Genesee Valley Railroad was founded, which, with the support of the Erie Railroad , built a 24 km long railway line from Dansville to Mount Morris by December 1871 , where there was a connection to the Erie Railroad infrastructure. The Erie Railroad leased and operated the route initially.

On October 21, 1891, the lease with the Erie Railroad ended, after which the newly founded Dansville and Mount Morris Railroad (DMM) took up passenger and freight traffic itself. From June 8, 1894 to September 30, 1927, however, the DMM was under insolvency administration . Since 1882, the main line Binghampton – Buffalo of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DL&W) ran parallel to the northeast of the DMM, sometimes at a greater distance and in the Dansville area around 120 m higher than the town . After many years of efforts and against the will of the Erie Railroad, DMM and DL&W were able to establish a track connection in Groveland in 1933 with the approval of the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) . The passenger traffic of the DMM was stopped in 1939 and in the freight traffic the wagon exchange with the Erie Railroad ended with the closure of the Erie connection from Avon to Mount Morris in early 1940. The approximately 11 km long section of the DMM from Groveland to Mount Morris was then between 1940 and 1943 gradually discontinued after the DMM had applied for this to the ICC in September 1939.

In 1960 DL&W and Erie Railroad merged to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad (EL), which closed its route southeast of Groveland in 1963. The section from Groveland to the northwest came to Conrail in 1976 and was taken over by the Genesee and Wyoming Railroad (GNWR) between Groveland and Greigsville in 1982 . The Genesee & Wyoming Inc. , one resulting from the GNWR holding company, took over the DMM on 23 July 1985th The management of the DMM was transferred to the GNWR on the same day. In 2003 Rochester & Southern Railroad took over the operation of the GNWR and with it the former DMM.

traffic

The DMM was mainly used to connect Dansville, while all stations on the way recorded little passenger and freight traffic. At the end of the 1970s, around 65,000 tons of freight were transported annually, around 90% of which was transported by the Foster Wheeler plant in Dansville. By 1995 the volume had gradually fallen to below 100 freight wagons per year. Even before the plant closed in March 2003, there was almost no rail traffic. RSR has only been using the former DMM route again in freight traffic since the beginning of 2006 in order to serve customers on the former Foster Wheeler site in Dansville, including the American Motive Power Inc. rail vehicle workshop. The former Dansville station is no longer served; the tracks end at the junction of the siding to the former Foster-Wheeler plant.
