The namesake Daphne as a cup with coral teeth, created by Abraham Jamnitzer, is now in the SKD in the Green Vault. This replica was made using the original mold by Wenzel Jamnitzer from the end of the 16th century.

robotron * Daphne is software for managing collections of cultural institutions and memory organizations (e.g. museums, archives, private collectors or artists' estates).

history

In 2005, on behalf of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD), the development work began by the Dresden company Robotron Database Software GmbH (RDS). With the help of the software, the SKD should for the first time be able to systematically research the origin of all accesses since 1933 as part of the “Daphne” project started in 2008.

The name Daphne is derived from the well-known drinking vessel that was created at the end of the 16th century by Abraham Jamnitzer based on the story of the mountain nymph Daphne from Greek mythology and is now part of the Green Vault in Dresden. In Greek mythology, Daphne is turned into a laurel bush. robotron * Daphne stands for the transformation of real works of art into digital media .

When it went live for the first time in 2006, the focus was on the functionalities of property registration (e.g. material, technology, property type, dating, key word, location, registrar data, etc.) and provenance research . Since then, robotron * Daphne has been continuously developed and functionally expanded significantly. With the extensive donation from the art collector Egidio Marzona in 2016 and the establishment of the Archive of the Avangarden (AdA) as a further collection of the SKD, an archive module was designed and implemented in 2017.

Functions and properties

The requirements for technological development consisted in covering the individual needs and heterogeneous collection profiles of all 15 collections in the museum association, and in creating a system that allows the processing of large amounts of data. The acquisition speed and the quick and easy training of museum employees were also in the foreground.

These system requirements shape the collection management system to this day. For example, functionalities such as copy functions, mass changes, fast entry or CSV imports enable a high collection rate. Collection-specific information can be recorded with the help of special data records - for example for numismatic or geological collections .

The modular structure made it possible to easily integrate additional modules for loan transactions , exhibition management, restorations , theater, literature, interviews, archiving and the online collection.

In addition to the inventory and indexing of the collections, museums in particular have the task of making their collections and findings accessible in the digital space and linking them to other institutions. This requires compliance with museum standards and the use of controlled vocabulary . Robotron * Daphne obtains authority data for persons, institutions and keywording from the common authority file of the German National Library . Geographic names are used by the open source GeoNames database . The integrated Art and Architecture Thesaurus supports multilingualism . With the help of LIDO , a standard format for data export, information from robotron * Daphne can be passed on to national (e.g. German digital library ) and international (e.g. Europeana ) portals.

With the SPECTRUM certification 2018, the software guarantees the current documentation guidelines for object registration and other museum procedures such as loan transactions, exhibition management or location management. In autumn 2019, a multimedia guide for Daphne was presented at Exponatec Cologne .

distribution

Today robotron * Daphne is used in numerous cultural institutions and memorial organizations, such as: City Museum Berlin , German Clock Museum Glashütte , DDR Museum Berlin , Brandenburg State Museum for Modern Art , Luther Memorials Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt , Custody of TU Dresden , Berlin Wall Foundation or the Company-owned company museum of Robotron Database Software GmbH (Robotron Museum).
