Daqin Railway's main business area is the operation of the Datong – Qinhuangdao railway , the freight railway with the largest capacity in the world. It leads from Datong ( Shanxi ) to the port of Qinhuangdao ( Hebei ). China's coal reserves are concentrated in the provinces of Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia , which, however, have no access to the Pacific Ocean . As a result, the railway line is primarily used to transport coal .

The second largest freight yard in China is located in Datong, where over 60 million tons of goods were loaded in 2012 alone.

During the all-time highs in coal prices in 2013 and 2014, 440–450 million tons of coal were transported on the Datong – Qinhuangdao railway line. For 2016 only 352 million t are expected.
