Darkan is a place and administrative seat of the Shire of West Arthur parish in Western Australia . The place is in the Wheatbelt region , between Collie and the Albany Highway .

history

The area was initially populated by William John Gibbs and his family in the 1860s. Gibbs founded a property named after the indistinct Aboriginal word Darkan . The place developed when the railway line from Collie to Narrogin was added. In 1906 Darkan was announced. After that, Darkan grew quickly. In the early 1990s the railway line was closed, but the surrounding wool crops and tourism have ensured the existence of the place.

Darkan is located 202 kilometers from Perth , 60 kilometers from Wagin , and 60 kilometers from Collie . According to the 2011 census, 217 people lived here.

Darkan is the social and political center of the Shire of West Arthur. The place has a rest house, a supermarket, a telecentro , a hotel, tennis courts, basketball fields, a local high school, and a skate field. The place is surrounded by a fertile wheat area.
