The area was initially populated by William John Gibbs and his family in the 1860s. Gibbs founded a property named after the indistinct Aboriginal word Darkan . The place developed when the railway line from Collie to Narrogin was added. In 1906 Darkan was announced. After that, Darkan grew quickly. In the early 1990s the railway line was closed, but the surrounding wool crops and tourism have ensured the existence of the place.
