Darmstadtia (Darmstadt)
The Darmstadtia is a cultural monument in Darmstadt . The former fountain figure represents the patron saint of the city.
History and description
The Darmstadtia - originally also called Hassia - was created in 1864 by Johann Baptist Scholl the Younger to crown a three-storey fountain ( Hassia fountain) with gas lanterns. The system was on Ludwigsplatz.
In 1905 the fountain had to give way to the Bismarck monument and was moved to Taunusplatz.
The Hassia Fountain was badly damaged in an air raid in 1944. Only the Darmstadtia statue could be saved.
The restored original of the Darmstadtia was placed on a hexagonal base and is now in the Darmstadtium .
A copy made of red sandstone has stood in Wolfskehl'schen Park since 1964 . This copy was made by the sculptor Karl J. Buchert from Groß -zimmer .
The Darmstadtia carries a sword in her right hand, a shield with a coat of arms in her left hand and a crenellated crown on her head.
