North German realists

North German Realists is the name of a loose Painters Association, which is taking place in the context of an annual plein-air - symposia has formed. The circle of artists, which is constituted anew every time, serves to work outdoors according to nature. This meeting took place for the first time in 1989, initiated by the painter Nikolaus Störtenbecker .

The North German Realists have existed under this name since 1995 and have set themselves the task of capturing the landscape of Schleswig-Holstein , in particular impressions of the island of Helgoland and the cities of Kiel , Lübeck , Schleswig and Rendsburg in a picturesque way. Ships and harbor scenes are among the subjects often depicted, impressions of nature and cityscapes as well as portraits complete the spectrum. The artistic legacy of the painters' association lies in realism and plein airism of the 19th century and is linked to names such as Gustave Courbet or the Barbizon School . A salient characteristic of the North German Realists is their figurative conception of images trained on these realistic tendencies. Her paintings are characterized by a lively painterly, sometimes expressive gesture and an impasto application of paint, which depict both landscapes and figures.
