Salsola melitensis is a plant from the family of amaranthaceae (Amaranthaceae), an important and often is-to-find synonymous Darniella melitensis . The species isnativeto Malta only.

description

Salsola melitensis is a dense shrub that reaches heights of up to 2.50 meters. The succulent leaves are small, as are the inconspicuous flowers. Flowering time is in summer. The fruits only bear one seed each, which is spread by the wind.

distribution

The species is native to Malta only , where it can be found on cliffs and rocky slopes near the sea. The species is common and widespread there.

Systematics

Salsola melitensis was first described by Viktor Petrowitsch Botschanzew in 1976 , the species name " melitensis " refers to Malta (Latin "melita"), in 1984 the species was placed in the genus Darniella . After molecular genetic studies, the genus Darniella and thus Darniella melitensis, however, went back to Salsola .
