Bridges over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis | ||
The Dartmouth Bridge is a box girder bridge , which the Mississippi River in Minneapolis , Minnesota between Cedar-Riverside and the campus of the University of Minnesota spans. It was designed by Parsons Brinckerhoff and Quade and Douglas and built in 1964.
The bridge has an unusual appearance compared to the other crossings of the Mississippi River in the vicinity. However, more vehicles use this bridge every day than any other route in Minnesota; Around 167,000 vehicles travel daily on Interstate 94 between central Minneapolis and Saint Paul . The 38 m long, 148 short ton box girders were prefabricated in Gary , Indiana and transported up the Mississippi River by barge in October 1963.
Until the beginning of August, the bridge crossed the river four lanes in both directions . One lane each is used to decelerate or accelerate at the junctions Huron Boulevard (east bank) or Riverside Avenue (west bank). After the collapse of the Interstate 35W Mississippi River Bridge , a diversion for traffic was set up that runs over a three-mile stretch of I-94 with the Dartmouth Bridge before heading north on Minnesota State Highway 280 . In order to be able to absorb the additional traffic load, the two directional lanes were newly marked; Since the end of August 2007 there have been five lanes in both directions over the bridge.
