Darwin or Port Darwin is a settlement on the Lafonia Peninsula in the East Falklands of the Falkland Islands . It is located on Choiseul Sound , on the eastern side of the isthmus of the islands. Goose Green is 2 miles south of Darwin.

It is named in honor of the natural scientist and founder of the theory of evolution Charles Darwin , who made a stop on the Falkland Islands on his second trip with the HMS Beagle .

The settlement was founded in 1859. At first, sheep farms were built there. Since most of Darwin's founders came from Scotland, a church of the Free Church of Scotland was built there.

Darwin was once the second largest settlement in the Falkland Islands after Stanley, with more than 200 farm workers. For years, however, Darwin only had two residents. The population is currently back at seven.

The Argentine military cemetery is located near Darwin, where 237 Argentine soldiers who died in the Falklands War are buried. In 2017, 123 Argentine soldiers were exhumed to hand the remains to their families.

Falklands War

Darwin and the surrounding area were the site of the Battle of Goose Green during the 1982 Falklands War .

On the morning of May 28, British troops of the Parachute Regiment captured Darwin Hill after intense fighting with the Argentine army .
