The Gender Paradox is the title of a non-fiction book published in 2016 by the German evolutionary biologist Ulrich Kutschera . It bears the subtitle man and woman as evolved types of people . The author traces the social constructivist gender theory back to the writings of the American psychologist John Money and would like to refute the thesis about the existence of a psychosocial gender that exists independently of biological gender .

The book ends with a glossary (Little Sex & Gender ABC); all key terms, from anisogamy to zygote , are briefly defined there.

History of origin

In the foreword, the author explains why he wrote this work, emphasizing that the text is based on the 4th edition of his textbook Evolutionary Biology (2015). After Kutschera published a provocative short article on gender issues with the title “University Pseudoscience” in the Humanist Press Service (hpd) on April 13, 2015 , which was then blocked by the hpd, a series of media inquiries began. In an article on Spiegel Online of September 4, 2015 with the title “Professor against Gender Research”, Kutschera announced a book on the gender paradox for the beginning of 2016; He will thus "drive the last nails into the coffin of gender ideology." The first edition appeared in February 2016, a new edition with additional content came on the market in early 2018. In the foreword of the second edition, Kutschera refers to the freedom of science in order to justify his controversial theses.

reception

The Freiburg biologist Hubert Rehm published a detailed review in the journal Spektrum der Wissenschaft . He characterizes the book as "informative and entertaining", but nevertheless sees a number of weaknesses in terms of content. The biology historian Armin Geus reviewed the second edition of Kutschera's non-fiction book in the right-wing populist blog Philosophia perennis in positive terms and describes the work as a "reliable, source-based manual that nobody should do without who seriously wants to participate in the (gender) debate."
