The animal (Subtitle: The international magazine for animals, humans and nature; later Grzimeks and Sielmann international journal for animal, human and natural ) was the title of a monthly published from 1960 to 2000 magazine . It was founded by Bernhard Grzimek , Heini Hediger and Konrad Lorenz . Later Karl von Frisch and Wolf Herre joined them. The magazine was initially published by Hallwag Verlag and was later taken over by Egmont Ehapa . The first edition appeared on October 1, 1960 with an edition of 60,000 copies. The first booklet consisted of 54 pages, four of which were in color. In the period that followed, the scope was increased and the magazine was designed in full color

Das Tier was one of the first German magazines to deal with the subject of species and animal protection , with Bernhard Grzimek very openly criticizing factory farming and battery cages .

The articles were partly of a scientific, partly popular or trivial nature and mostly richly illustrated. The magazine's spectrum ranged from articles by well-known scientists, such as the former WWF General Director Claude Martin , to photo series by nature photographers such as Hans Dionys Dossenbach or Willi Dolder, to reports on experiences with pets. The main topics were wildlife, domestic animals, animal welfare and environmental protection. There was also an animal market with classifieds and tips for amateur nature photographers.

In 1981 Das Tier merged with the magazine Sielmanns Tierwelt , which had been published by Heinz Sielmann since 1977 , whereby the title “Das Tier” was retained and Sielmann acted as a second editor alongside Grzimek. After the death of Bernhard Grzimek in 1987, Harald Schliemann became co-editor.

In 1998, Ehapa-Verlag in Leinfelden-Echterdingen took over the publishing rights to the magazine. Barbara Hauter became the new editor-in-chief. The last issue appeared in February 2000 and Das Tier went up in the magazine natur + kosmos .
