The Sign of the Devil (OT: La Marca del Demonio ) is a Mexican horror film by Diego Cohen from 2020. The film deals with the topic of exorcism .

action

The linguist Cecilia receives an ancient book that is somewhat reminiscent of the Necronomicon , the legendary work by HP Lovecraft with which one can summon demons. Despite all precautions, it falls into the hands of their two daughters, Camila and Fernanda. Camila reads something from the book but has no idea what she's doing with it. After a night of drinking she falls into a coma for three days, but her sister Fernanda quickly notices that it wasn't just the alcohol: her sister speaks in Latin and gets grotesque black eyes when she gets upset.

Fernanda turns to Karl Nüni, a priest who specializes in exorcism, but who also carries his demons with him. He is addicted to alcohol and drugs. Together with his pupil Tomás, himself obsessed and unpredictable, the two take on the case.

While the exorcism begins, the parents intervene, who want to stop everything first. But when Fernanda also attacks the priests and parents, it is too late. The parents are killed in a cruel showdown. Tomás manages to free the two sisters from the demons. They now have to live with the guilt of murdering their parents. It is also too late for Tomás, he dies on the spot. Karl takes him to the mountains and puts him to rest in a cave. He returns from the dead three days later.

The film was released in Mexico on January 3, 2020. It was bought and dubbed by Netflix and had its worldwide premiere on March 27, 2020 on the streaming platform.

Reviews

The film was generally rated rather poorly. Janick Nolting from Filmstarts only awarded one of five possible stars and summed up: “Even the best exorcist doesn't help anymore! The sign of the devil is confusingly told and dreary staged horror fast food to slumber away. ”Oliver Armknecht from Filmrezätze awarded 3 out of ten points. His conclusion: “ The sign of the devil starts unobtrusively, has some solid pictures and a talented lead actor. But that's not enough to make the slightest recommendation to the uninspired horror botch about a young person who is obsessed after reading an evil book. "
