The Lexicon of Time

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ZEIT-Lexikon or Die Zeit - the lexicon with the best from the time in 20 volumes is a multi-volume reference work in German . The first edition was published in 2004/05 by Zeitverlag in cooperation with the Bibliographisches Institut Mannheim .

Objective of the work

In the editorial foreword to the first volume of the 1st edition, the aim of the work is described:

“The word about the knowledge society we live in today continues to provoke different reactions. To some it sounds like a promise, to others find it threatening. But whatever the knowledge-based society may mean for people, wherever it will lead, its motto is clear and means: Learn! [...] The »Lexicon of TIME« wants to meet this demand. The twenty volumes […] represent an experiment. Two journalistic cultures come together for this project: Proven lexicography is combined with […] journalism. The result is a combination of equally worth knowing and well-founded facts and opinions, [...] information and interpretations. […] Most of the texts reflect the current state of knowledge, some are ZEIT history. In a bundle, they should offer what this lexicon wants to convey: not just what we know today, also what we once thought. "

The work comes closer to this goal, among other things, by presenting ZEIT background reports on the most important topics and people in the appendix to each volume ( ZEIT aspects ) .
