The Other Russia or Other Russia ( Russian Другая Россия / Drugaja Rossija ) is an alliance of several opposition parties in Russia . The aim of the extra-parliamentary movement was to stand as a united opposition to the Russian parliamentary elections in December 2007 and the presidential elections in March 2008 . However, both goals were not achieved.
History of the coalition
The alliance was founded on July 12, 2006, when over 300 participants met in Moscow during the St. Petersburg G8 summit under the title The Other Russia . In the summer of 2006, under the chairmanship of the former world chess champion Garry Kasparov , opposition parties, civil rights activists and non-governmental organizations from all over Russia met for the first time against the policies of Vladimir Putin .
Under the name The Other Russia, they forged a temporary civil society alliance across all political borders, which Kasparov compared with that of 1988/89 in Chile , "when a broad community of action brought down the dictatorship".
The main leaders of The Other Russia are Garry Kasparov and Eduard Limonov , chairman of the National Bolshevik Party of Russia , which was banned in 2005 . Former Prime Minister Mikhail Kassyanov was part of the coalition with his People's Democratic Alliance party until the summer of 2007, but left the coalition due to differences of opinion regarding the candidate for the alliance for the 2008 presidential election . Above all, the lack of a common concrete goal and concept for the future of Russia is viewed critically in the alliance - apart from the common opposition to the Putin government. In Russia, the most prominent leader in the Kasparov alliance has been criticized primarily for his close contacts with the US government and its links with organizations that are close to it.
In October 2007 the Central Election Commission refused to register the Other Russia parliamentary list. The reason given was a provision in the law that candidates may only be appointed by registered political parties. The coalition considered this provision of the law to be unconstitutional.
An important instrument of The Other Russia is the so-called March of the Dissatisfied ( Марш несогласных ), a term that Kasparov coined in 2005. In general, the alliance relies on street protests that attract media attention, especially in the West, while Kasparov did not take part in the 2008 presidential elections.
