Das kleine Ich-bin-ich is a classic children's book by Mira Lobe (text) and Susi Weigel (book idea and drawings), published by Jungbrunnen in 1972 . Mira Lobe received the Austrian State Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature for this book in 1972 .

Content and background

The little I-am-I is a small, indefinable, colorful animal that is searching for its identity . The colorful animal walks across a flower meadow and meets a frog. The frog wants to know what kind of animal it is. The little I-am-I don't know the answer. Desperately it asks various other animals (horses, fish, white birds, hippos, parrots, dogs) if anyone knows who it is. But nobody knows. The little I-am-I finally asks itself: "Is there no such thing as me?" Suddenly the realization hits like lightning. The colorful animal recognizes: “I'm sure there is me: I am I!” The little I-am-I is happy and immediately passes on its knowledge to all other living beings.

In addition, the book contains handicraft instructions with the help of which you can create an I-am-I yourself , which was practiced in kindergartens and elementary schools .

Four months before her death, Susi Weigel , the illustrator of the classic children's book, told in a newspaper interview how the book idea for “Das kleine Ich-bin-Ich”, based on her own memories, came about: “'We had a dear nanny who I liked very much, 'recalls the artist. In old age this woman was a little confused and kept asking, 'Who am I - I am I?' Susi Weigel never let go of this experience. 'I suddenly realized that it's similar to children, they are looking for their own identity.' "

Publications

The book was published in 1972 and was sold around 900,000 times by 2012. The little I-am-me has been translated into numerous languages ​​- including Chinese and Japanese. The children's book was published in 1988 by Hermagoras Verlag, Klagenfurt / Celovec, in a Slovenian translation with the title Mali jaz sem jaz . The work has so far seen several editions in translation. In 2011 “Das kleine Ich-bin-ich” was translated into Turkish, Serbian and Croatian for the Austrian market. A multilingual edition was also published in which the languages ​​Turkish, Serbian, Croatian and German are combined. An English-language edition was also published in 2014.

The first trilingual edition in German, Arabic and Farsi appeared in 2016 and is intended to make learning German and thus integration easier.

The children's book also serves as a template for plays, music CDs and computer programs.
