The Jungbrunnen publishing house is a children's and youth book publisher based in Vienna . It was founded in 1923 by the Austrian Children's Friends , who are still the publisher's owners today. Publishing history

The publishing house was founded in 1923 by the Austrian Children's Friends . The first book was published in 1925: The children accuse - children's letters about the flogging of Anton Tesarek , a member of the Kinderfreunde and founder of the Rote Falken . The first publications were publications that were needed for socialist educational work. In 1934 the publishing house was closed due to the ban on the Socialist Party and its sub-organizations. In 1946 the publishing house was re-established, now as a company of the “Socialist Party of Austria, Free School - Children's Friends” association. Immediately after the war, Jakob Bindel became the Federal Secretary for Kinderfreunde and was therefore also responsible for the publishing house. This regulation, that the Federal Secretary of Kinderfreunde automatically acted as the publishing director, was in force until the 1980s.

An anthology was published in 1951 and 1952 , which brought together texts by then young, still completely unknown authors (including Marlen Haushofer , Ilse Aichinger , Andreas Okopenko , Gerhard Fritsch ). These anthologies are relevant for two reasons: on the one hand, because this was, for once, against the publisher's other program line of literature for adults, and on the other, because all these authors are of great importance today. In 1954 the City of Vienna's Children's and Youth Book Prize was awarded for the first time to a fountain of youth title: Giovanna and the Swamp by Karl Bruckner . The first Austrian State Prize for Youth Literature was also awarded in 1955 to a book by Jungbrunnen Verlag: “Prince Soap Bubble” by Irene Stemmer.

At the end of 1962, Kurt Biak took over responsibility for the publishing house as the new federal secretary. Biak opened the publishing house to the book trade and began to build up and retain the first in-house authors and illustrators: Vera Ferra-Mikura , Romulus Candea , Karl Bruckner and Winfried Bruckner . In 1966, Hans Matzenauer , who later became President of the Vienna City School Board, became Federal Secretary for Kinderfreunde. It was his concern to bring explosive and political issues to the Jungbrunnen-Verlag program. His motto: show young people the world as it is, aside from clichés. Books such as Ernst Gehmacher's We Were There, which deals with the Nazi past, or Wolf Harranth's picture book “Da ist eine Gottes Wiese”, which already dealt with environmental protection in 1972, are prototypes of Matzenauer's program line.

A sign that the publisher had already broken away from the party-political imprint at that time was the fact that in 1979 the first Catholic children's and youth book prize was awarded to a fountain of youth title: Don't wait for an angel by Else Breen. The profiling in terms of content was also accompanied by professionalization in sales, and the books began to be sold in Germany and Switzerland beyond the borders of Austria. In 1982 Hubert Hladej, who came from the Jugend & Volk publishing house, became the first managing director who was not the Federal Secretary for Kinderfreunde. Wolf Harranth, who had worked as a lecturer for Jungbrunnen since 1960 but had also been a successful translator and author for a long time, was his successor two years later and remained Jungbrunnen's managing director until 1985. Ellen Weigel followed him. Hildegard Gärtner has been managing director since 1992. In 1995 the publishing house was converted into a GmbH . To this day it is still owned by the Austrian Children's Friends. The work of the Jungbrunnen publishing house has been awarded many prizes, since 1955 alone 56 Jungbrunnen books have received the Austrian State Prize (since 1973 the “ Austrian Children's and Youth Book Prize ”).

Even today, the publisher claims to attach great importance to explosive topics as well as high quality content, language and illustrations outside the mainstream. Jungbrunnen wants to entertain young readers without fooling them into trivial ideal and pseudo-worlds. Original editions predominate in the Jungbrunnen publishing house, licenses are only purchased in rare cases . The main principle of the publishing house is to work with authors and illustrators not only for individual books but also for the long term. The sale of licenses plays an important role, 75 percent of all titles have been translated into other languages. An average of ten to twelve new books appear every year, half of them are picture books , the other half are books for children and young people .

Jungbrunnen Verlag not only consistently maintains its backlist, which includes classics by Mira Lobe and Vera Ferra-Mikura , among others , it also repeatedly publishes first works and thus builds up new talents (such as Helga Bansch , Rachel van Kooij , Brigitte Younger).
