Nikel's art is based on classical modernism and uses stylistic elements and the like. a. from Cézanne , Munch , Marc back. His work is divided into the areas of painting, sculpture, performance and art in public spaces. In all forms of expression, he works both figuratively and abstractly . Despite this variety of working methods, unifying stylistic features can be seen in his work, which run through the art forms.

Some of his groups of sculptures were designed for public space and are e.g. B. to visit in the Potsdam State Authority Center. In addition to his pictures and sculptures, Nikel has also developed large steel objects and small mobiles. These abstract works also deal with the interplay of different forces that are kept in balance by the composition.

In addition to these connecting lines, a change in Nikels working methods can be recognized over the years of his work, which results from changed interests and cultural influences. While in the 1980s Nikel also made use of actionist forms in the tradition of Fluxus and political happenings , his work from the 1990s onwards was mainly characterized by an intensive conceptual examination of the tradition of modernity .

In recent times, there has been an increasing emphasis on nature motifs in Nikels work, which is related to his second residence in Rheinsberg .
