Dave Gallaher Trophy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dave Gallaher Trophy ( French Trophée Dave Gallaher ) is a cup competition in the sport of rugby union , which is played between the national teams of France and New Zealand (All Blacks). The cup is named after David "Dave" Gallaher , the team captain of the " Original All Blacks " from 1905/06, who died in France during the First World War . The competition was introduced in 2000.

The competition is based on a challenge system. The team that owns the cup must defend it in challenge games. If the other team wins, the trophy goes into their possession. In the event of a tie there is no change of ownership. There can only be one cup game in the same year. If there are two or more international matches between the two teams in the same year, the associations involved agree on which match for the trophy will be played. If the teams meet during the Rugby Union World Cup , this does not count as a game for the trophy.

France won the trophy for the first time in 2009. It was played over two games that year, with the French scoring one point more than New Zealand. In the fall of 2000, France had already defeated New Zealand, but the All Blacks had won the Challenge game a week earlier.
