David "Dave" Gallaher (born October 30, 1873 in Ramelton , County Donegal , Ireland , † October 4, 1917 in Passchendaele , Belgium ) was a New Zealand rugby union player . He played in the position of winger and was the team captain of the " Original All Blacks ", the first New Zealand national team to travel to Europe.

When he was four, Gallaher's family emigrated to New Zealand. He first lived in Katikati in the Bay of Plenty area and then moved to Auckland in the 1890s . There he began to play for the Ponsonby RFC. With the provincial selection of the Auckland Rugby Football Union Gallaher completed 26 games, including the first challenge game for the Ranfurly Shield .

From 1903 to 1906 he played 36 times for the All Blacks (the national team), including six internationals. The highlight of his career was the tour of the "Original All Blacks" to Europe, during which he was used 26 times (including four international matches). Together with Billy Stead he wrote The Complete Rugby Footballer on the return trip to New Zealand , which is still considered one of the most influential rugby textbooks to this day.

Gallaher had fought in the Boer War in 1901 and 1902 and was promoted to corporal. Although he was exempt from military service because of his advanced age, he volunteered for service in the First World War in 1917 . He was killed in the Third Battle of Flanders in the attack on the Belgian village of Passchendaele.

The Dave Gallaher Trophy , introduced in 2000, is named after him and is presented to the winner of the New Zealand - France international match . In 2005, Gallaher was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame .
