from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dave Gilbert or David Gilbert (* 1976 ) is an American computer game designer . In 2006 he founded the independent development studio Wadjet Eye Games in New York and published self-produced adventure games such as The Shivah and the Blackwell series.

Early years

Gilbert discovered his love for adventure games at the age of ten when his mother gave him the text adventure Wishbringer from the US company Infocom . Fifteen years later, in 2001, he developed his first own adventure game with Repossessor , using the Reality-on-the-Norm series of games created by Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw and used by other developers . Three more games in this series followed by 2003. During this time, game development was only a sideline or hobby, parallel to his work as an English teacher in Asia. This was followed by the freeware game Two of a Kind , for which he also produced in a team for the first time. The attempt to produce an adventure game on the scale of commercial games called Bestowers of Eternity with a team of graphic designers failed because Gilbert had taken over organizational responsibility. From this point on, he limited himself to the production of small-scale games in order to ensure fast completion, which motivates the team.

Career

In 2006 he decided to become a professional game developer and moved to New York , where he founded Wadjet Eye Games .

His first commercial success was The Shivah , an adventure game in which Gilbert's religious origins resonate. It is told from the perspective of a rabbi and deals with a criminal case related to Judaism in American society. In the daily New York Times , on CNN and in the Israeli press, the publication of the game was reported as "interesting news from the game market" due to the social aspects dealt with therein. Gilbert had previously sold a scaled-down version of the game as freeware and dared to take the plunge into self-employment with a revised, higher-quality version.

With the adventure The Blackwell Legacy , he laid the foundation for a five-part game series that he developed between 2006 and 2014. The fifth and final part, The Blackwell Epiphany , was published on April 24, 2014. The game series developed on the Engine Adventure Game Studio (AGS) received several awards and was positively rated by well-known computer magazines.
