Dave Kleis (born January 21, 1964 ) is an American politician. He served in the Minnesota Senate and has served as Mayor of the 60,000 city of St. Cloud since 2005 . Kleis belongs to the Republican Party .

Life

After graduating from Litchfield High School , Dave Kleis studied Political Science and History at St. Cloud State University . In 1989 he graduated from college with magna cum laude . He then served actively in the United States Air Force and was later a reservist . In 1991 Dave Kleis opened a driving school.

Kleist got the chance for a higher political office at the end of 1994. Senator Joanne Benson was running mate of Governor Arne Carlson and became lieutenant governor of Minnesota after his re-election . The new elections for the now vacant Senate seat of the Republican Benson won their party colleague Dave Kleis. 42.45% of the votes were enough for him to prevail against several opponents. His toughest competitor, Joe Opatz of the Minnesota Democratic Peasants and Workers Party , received 37.94%. In the regular Senate elections in 1996, 2000 (two-year election period) and 2002, Kleis was re-elected with over 50% of the vote. Kleis has served on various Senate committees, most commonly in the fields of education and crime prevention. From 2001 to 2004 he was a vice chairman of the Republican minority group ( Assistant Minority Leader ).

In 2005, Dave Kleis ran for the office of Mayor of St. Cloud. Already in 1989 he ran for election but was defeated by Chuck Winkelman . This time Kleis made the leap into mayor's office, defeating incumbent John Ellenbecker by almost 1,000 votes. Kleis gave up his Senate seat prematurely after winning this election.

Dave Kleis was re-elected in 2008 and most recently in November 2012; apart from write-in candidates, he had no opponents.
