Gérard Pochonet

Gérard "Dave" Pochonet (* 20th May 1924 in Paris ; † 26. January 2000 in New York City ) was a French jazz - drummer , composer and bandleader .

Pochonet began his musical career in the post-war period; In 1949 he already appeared with his own orchestra in the CC Club . In the early 1950s he worked with Jack Butler, Robert Mavounzy , Henri Renaud , Bill Coleman and in a trio with Art Simmons . In 1952 he founded a quartet with André Persiany , Bill Tamper and Charlie Blareau, which existed until 1954. From 1953 Pochonet played in Tony Proteau's orchestra, with whom he accompanied Sidney Bechet . In the same year he had a duo with Hazel Scott and Buddy Banks .

At the third Salon du Jazz in Salle Pleyel in 1954, he was a member of an all-star formation with Jonah Jones , Guy Lafitte and Michel de Villers . In the summer of 1954 he accompanied Mary Lou Williams during her engagement at the Grand Ecart and the Bœuf sur le Toit ; he also participated in her recordings with Don Byas . Further recordings were made during this time with Bobby Jaspar and Buck Clayton .

To facilitate communication with his American colleagues, he called himself "Dave" Pochonet. Pochonet's orchestra brought together some of the most important Parisian musicians of the time, including the guitarist Jean-Pierre Sasson , the trombonist Charles Verstraete and the pianist André Persiany. As a musical link between his pianist and himself, Dave Pochonet had integrated the Belgian bassist Benoît Quersin into his rhythm section. During this time, Pochonet's composition "Thinkin 'of Inez" , which was recorded by Jonah Jones & the Dave Pochonet All Stars, was written.

In 1956 he performed with his own orchestra in the Closerie des Lilas , took part in the jam sessions at the Hot Club de Paris and - on the recommendation of Mary Lou Williams - put together several groups for recordings with Emmett Berry and Lucky Thompson , including a. with Martial Solal , Michel de Villers , Henri Renaud . In 1958 he accompanied Bill Coleman with his orchestra , in 1959 there was another session with Lucky Thompson ( " Tea for Two " ). In the late 1950s, Pochonet moved to the United States, where he performed with Mary Lou Williams at the Wells Supper Club in 1961 and on her 1963 album Mary Lou Williams Presents Black Christ of the Andes . In 1964/65 further recordings were made with Lucky Thompson. Until the mid-1970s, Pochonet performed with their own quartet in New York. In 1977 he played with Wild Bill Davis and Dany Doriz at the Caveau de la Huchette in Paris .
