David Bain

David Michael Bain (born July 3, 1945 in Carlisle , † November 30, 2004 in Manchester ) was a British classical scholar , especially a Graecist .

Life

Born in Carlisle , he grew up in Melrose ( Scottish Borders ) and received his education at Galashiels Academy . From 1963 to 1967 he studied at St Andrews Classical Philology , then he moved to Oxford , St John's College , where he in 1973 under the direction of Hugh Lloyd-Jones with the work Asides and related conventions in Greek drama doctorate . Since 1971 he has taught at the University of Manchester, first as a lecturer, later as Professor of Greek, and in 2001 he retired early. On November 30, 2004 , he died of a heart attack.

With his work on Greek drama, he made significant contributions to the understanding of the dramatic technique; other research areas in which he worked successfully were the history of medicine and magic , but also Aeschrology (frowned upon words and their explanation).
