David Brainerd (born April 20, 1718 in Haddam (Connecticut) , † October 9, 1747 in Northampton (Massachusetts) ) was an American missionary among North American Indians .

Life

At the age of 21, he began studying at Yale University , but had to finish after three years by expulsion from the university. The university later named Brainerd Hall at Yale Divinity School after him; it is the only building on campus named after a student expelled from the university.

Brainerd had few conversions, but he was best known for books written about him. His diary was published in 1746 by the Scottish Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge . Jonathan Edwards wrote An Account of the Life of the Late Rev. David Brainerd , based primarily on the diaries of David Brainerd, which became a classic in missionary biographies. A new edition with the diary and Brainerd's letters was published in 1822 by Sereno E. Dwight. In 1884, The Memoirs of David Brainerd , edited by James M. Sherwood, was published.

“And now, on the whole, I think I can rightly say that there are here all the indications and evidence of a remarkable work of grace among these Indians that one could reasonably wish or expect. May the great author of these works promote and preserve it here and spread it everywhere until the whole earth is of its glory! Amen."
