David D. Lauer (1983)

David D. Lauer (born May 9, 1939 in Trier ; † January 7, 2014 in Gleisweiler ) was a versatile German sculptor who worked with both the classical means of sculpture (clay, marble, bronze, etc.) and modern materials ( V2A steel, Corten steel , lead, Plexiglas and many more) implemented his figurative sculptures and modular sculptures. He has also created some large works of art in public spaces . David D. Lauer was a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg from 1974 to 2004 .

Short biography

David D. Lauer was born in Trier in 1939. He completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter there from 1953 to 1957. 1961–1967 he studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe with Prof. Hans Kindermann (graduated in 1967 as a master class student). From 1965 until his death he was a member of the Artists Association of Baden-Württemberg. In 1973/1974 he received a visiting professorship at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, after which he worked there as a full professor for works from 1975–2004. 1982 became a member of the German Werkbund. Lauer completed a research semester in Florence in 1983 . In 1994 he founded the artist group Ataraxia with Ingrid Dahn and Max Schmitz. Lauer took part in numerous exhibitions, competitions and symposia - u. a. in Germany, Italy, Japan and Switzerland - part. He lived and worked for 30 years in Karlsruhe and from 1990 in Gleisweiler (Palatinate), where he was buried in 2014.

Art in public space (selection)

  • 1986 Large Gate , Gaggenau Metal Symposium, purchase for the Gaggenau pedestrian zone. Corten steel, 680 × 440 × 160 cm (HBT).
  • 1988 Monument sculpture for the Karlsruhe marshalling yard (competition). The sculpture made of V2A and Corten steel shows tracks that shorten downwards. It has the dimensions 12 × 4 × 2 m.
  • In 1989 his sculpture Figur ( bronze body on a basalt lava base) was installed in the Viersen sculpture collection .
  • 1990 Column wall , Carl Benz School for Metal Construction and Machine Technology Gaggenau (competition). 6 columns - 6 modules each 60 cm × 60 cm × 60 cm - 5 × basalt lava and 1 × lead / iron / copper / brass / V4A / aluminum - arranged from ›closed‹ to ›open‹ and from ›heavy‹ to ›Light‹ - total height 360 cm.
