David Dixon Porter
David Dixon Porter (born June 8, 1813 in Chester , Pennsylvania , † February 13, 1891 in Washington, DC ) was an American admiral .
Life
Porter entered the service of Mexico in 1827 under the command of his father David Porter , who was admiral of the Mexican fleet, participated in the memorable attack of the brig Guerrero on the Spanish frigate La Lealtad as a midshipman in the same year, joined the armed forces of the United States in 1829 States and rendered them great service against Mexico, especially in the Civil War , by converting merchant ships into warships and gunboats in a very short time by armoring the ship's walls.
Porter supported his stepbrother David Glasgow Farragut in the ventures against New Orleans and Vicksburg and in 1864 received the supreme command of the fleet on the Mississippi River . Appointed vice admiral in 1866, Porter was appointed Union admiral after Farragut's death in 1870.
Honors
- Five ships of the United States Navy were named USS Porter in honor of him and his father .
