David Gilbert (* 1967 in Paris , France ) is an American writer and screenwriter .

Life

David Gilbert grew up in the upper class of a Morgan Stanley banking family in New York City in the WASP world of the Upper East Side . He attended St. George's School in Newport , studied at Middlebury College , Vermont, and successfully completed his master's degree in creative writing at the University of Montana in 1995 . During his student days, he often wrote short stories about people living on the poverty line. Some of these stories were later published in Harper's Magazine and the New Yorker , among others . This gave him a two-book book deal with the Charles Scribner's Sons publishing house . His debut was in 1998 with the collection of short stories Remote Feed .

With the novel The Normals , published six years later , a story about a man who exposes himself to drug tests to pay off his student debt, Gilbert finally fulfilled the contract from which he would have preferred to be released. It received favorable reviews and although hardly 2,000 copies were sold, it was published under the title Die Normalen after a translation by Chris Hirte in 2005 by Eichborn Verlag in Frankfurt . His second Roman & Sons , published in 2013, was also published by Eichborn Verlag in the German edition in 2014, but this time after a translation by Stefanie Schäfer .

In parallel to his writing, Gilbert also tried his hand at scriptwriting. Of three completed scripts so far, only one has been filmed with the 2007 thriller Joshua - The Firstborn .

Gilbert lives in New York City with his wife, who attended Phillips Exeter Academy , and their two children.
