Sir David Hamilton (born October 24, 1950 in Dalkeith ) is a Scottish politician .

Life

Hamilton was born in Dalkeith in 1950. He attended Dalkeith High School , which he left at the age of 15. Raised in Midlothian , one of the largest coal mining centers in Scotland, Hamilton took up the miner's trade, which he held for 19 years. He was a member of the Scottish branch of the National Union of Mineworkers and rose to the top of the union. In the course of the miners' strike in 1984/1985, Hamilton was assigned a substantial share in the rescue of the Monktonhall Colliery , which was finally closed in 1997. He was used as the coordinator of the 22 strike centers and lost his job as a result of this task. He later got involved in public projects and raised EU funds for the Midlothian region.

Political career

Since 1995, Hamilton sat for the Labor Party on the Midlothian Regional Council. For the first time he appeared in the 2001 general election to national elections. His constituency of Midlothian is traditionally shaped by coal mining and all MPs since the end of the war ( David Pryde , James Hill , Alex Eadie and Eric Clarke ) have been Labor politicians with professional roots in mining. Although no coal has been mined in Midlothian since 1997, the party chose Hamilton as a candidate.

With a share of the vote of 52.7%, Hamilton clearly prevailed against his five opponents on election day and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the following elections in 2005 and 2010 , he kept his mandate safe. In parliament, he acted, among other things, as the whip of the Scottish Labor MPs.

Hamilton describes himself as a socialist . In parliament he campaigned for the interests of mining and miners. So he fought for compensation payments for occupational illnesses of former miners. In January of the same year he announced that he would no longer run for the 2015 general election. His successor Kenny Young could not prevail against the SNP candidate Owen Thompson and the mandate did not go to a Labor politician for the first time since the constituency existed.
