Political career

In 2005, Thompson was elected to the Midlothian Regional Council as part of a by-election for the SNP for the Loanhead District. At the time of the election he was Scotland's youngest councilor. In the British general election in 2015 , Thompson applied for the SNP for the mandate of his home constituency Midlothian . He inherited his party colleague Colin Beattie , who could not win a seat in the two previous elections. The incumbent Labor politician David Hamilton , who has represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since 2001 , did not run for these elections. With the massive gains in votes by the SNP in these elections, Thompson won the majority with 50.6% and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. In Parliament, Thompson was a member of the Committee of Selection . With a loss of votes, Thompson lost his seat to Labor candidate Danielle Rowley in the early general election in 2017 and subsequently resigned from the House of Commons. In the 2019 general election , he recaptured the constituency.
