history
Located in the middle of a coal mining area, Rosewell developed as a mining community of the Whitehill Colliery . Its owner, the coal baron Archibald Hood , had a large part of the houses built in the late 19th century. The stones come from the associated brickworks, which used clay as a by-product of coal mining. Hood also took care of building public facilities such as schools, churches, and shops. After Hood's merger with Schomberg Kerr, 9th Marquess of Lothian , the Lothian Coal Company was formed , which Rosewell ran until the coal mining industry was nationalized in the 1940s. The mine closed in 1961.
With the advent of coal mining, the population rose from 390 in 1861 to 2129 within 20 years. In the 20th century the population showed a decline. It fell from 1930 in 1951 to 1566 in the 2011 census survey.
