Eric Clarke (born April 9, 1933 ) is a Scottish politician .

Life

Clarke attended Edinburgh Catholic School and was then educated at technical colleges. He entered professional life at the age of 16. He stayed true to his job as a miner for 26 years. Clarke was secretary to the Scottish branch of the National Union of Mineworkers for twelve years . From 1984 to 1988 he was his union representative on the National Executive Committee of the Labor Party , but then lost the support of union leader Arthur Scargill .

Political career

Clarke was a councilor in his area for 16 years. For the first time he stood for the Labor Party in the general election in 1992 for elections at the national level. His constituency of Midlothian is traditionally shaped by coal mining and all MPs since the end of the war ( David Pryde , James Hill and Alex Eadie ) have been Labor politicians with professional roots in mining. After Eadie was no longer available for the 1992 elections, Clarke continued this tradition. On election day he prevailed safely against his four opponents and moved into the British House of Commons for the first time .

In Parliament, Clarke campaigned for the preservation of the declining Scottish coal industry. From 1994 to 1997 he was Whip of the opposition Labor Group. In the following general election in 1997 he held his mandate and was able to increase his share of the vote by 9.6% to 53.5%. At the 2001 elections, Clarke did not occur at more. His party colleague David Hamilton held the mandate for the Labor Party. A total of 365 contributions by Clarke are recorded in Parliament.
