David Karp (born July 6, 1986 in New York City ) is an American web developer and entrepreneur . He is the founder and CEO of the blogging platform Tumblr . According to business magazine Forbes , his personal fortune is $ 200 million and Tumblr's is estimated at $ 800 million.

David Karp was born in New York City and grew up as the older of two brothers in the Upper West Side in Manhattan on. His parents separated when he was 17 years old. Up to eighth grade he attended Calhoun School, a private school in New York where his mother Barbara Ackerman teaches science. He started learning HTML at the age of 11 and was soon designing corporate websites. He attended the Bronx High School of Science for a year before dropping out of school and taking home lessons . Karp never returned to high school and did not graduate from high school.

Career

At the age of 14, Karp began an internship with animation producer Fred Seibert, founder of "Frederator Studios". When the entrepreneur John Maloney was looking for specialists for his Internet forum "UrbanBaby", an employee of Frederator Studios recommended Karp for the position where he was permanently employed. At the age of 17, still working for UrbanBaby, Karp moved to Tokyo for five months alone . Karp left UrbanBaby after the group was sold to CNET in 2006 . With the capital from the sale of his shares, Karp started his own software consulting company Davidville. Marco Arment joined the company as a developer and a year later the two started working on their own blogging platform. Tumblr was finally released in February 2007 and after two weeks the service had over 75,000 users.

In October 2007, Karp left his consulting firm when his work for Tumblr could no longer be reconciled with his customer service. Davidville was renamed Tumblr, Inc. and 25 percent of the company was sold to investors. On May 1, 2015, Tumblr was already hosting over 234.2 million blogs.

On May 20, 2015, it was announced that Yahoo! Bought Tumblr for $ 1.1 billion. Karp would also remain CEO of the company.

Personal

Karp holds various stakes in companies, including Superpedestrian, Inc., the company behind the so-called "Copenhagen Wheel", and Sherpaa, Inc., a startup company with the health monitoring app of the same name.
