David Macdonald (politician)
David Samuel Horne Macdonald , PC (born August 20, 1936 in Charlottetown ) is a Canadian politician.
Macdonald was first elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1965 as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in the province of Prince Edward Island . After the 1979 election, he became Minister for Communication and for Women ( Minister responsible for the Status of Women ) and State Secretary in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Joe Clark .
In 1980 he lost his seat in parliament. As a representative of Toronto-Rosedale, he was again a member of the lower house from 1988 to 1993. He earned the reputation of a "Red Tory", i. H. a representative of leftist positions within conservatism (in contrast to the "Blue Tory"). He moved to the social democratic New Democratic Party in 1997 , but as their candidate he lost the election in the same year against his rival Bill Graham .
In 1998 he became an advisor to the United Church of Canada on the problem of residential schools .
