David Neil "Dave" Cutler (born March 13, 1942 in Lansing , Michigan ) is an American software developer . He developed for the company Digital Equipment Corporation , the real-time operating system VAXELN and the RSX-11 - and the VMS - operating system . He was poached by Microsoft in 1988 to design the new Windows NT operating system and to lead the development.

Life

David Cutler grew up in DeWitt , Michigan. After graduating from Olivet College with a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1965 , he worked at DuPont . One of his tasks there was to develop computer simulations on digital computers. He eventually left DuPont because of his great interest in operating system architecture .

Cutler's software career began as a co-founder of Agrippa-Ord . Located in Monument Square, Concord, Massachusetts (or possibly Acton, Massachusetts ), it marketed software for LINC and PDP-8 computers.

In addition to his technical skills, Cutler is known for his sardonic humor. This was occasionally reflected in grim error messages .

Cutler is an avid racing driver. He first competed in the Atlantic Championship from 1996 to 2002 and then started a career in the top eight on the Milwaukee Mile 2000.

In 2016 Cutler was accepted as a Fellow of the Computer History Museum .
