David Mark Neuhaus SJ (born April 25, 1962 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) is an Israeli Jesuit . He was Patriarchal Vicar for the Hebrew-speaking Catholics in the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem from 2009 to 2017 .

Life

David Neuhaus, son of German Jews, was born in South Africa. At the age of 15 he moved to Israel; at the age of 26 he converted to the Roman Catholic faith. He graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with a doctorate in political science . In 1992 he joined the Jesuit order and made his profession on August 20, 1994 . After completing his theological and philosophical training and studying theology and Holy Scriptures at the Jesuit Center Sèvres in Paris and the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome , he was ordained a priest on September 8, 2000. Since 2001 he has been teaching "Introduction to Judaism" and "Introduction to the Old Testament" at the University of Bethlehem, as well as biblical studies at the Latin Patriarchal Seminary in Bait Jala . He is also a research fellow at the Jewish Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. He is currently working on a doctorate in religious studies at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut , Lebanon .

On March 15, 2009, David Neuhaus was appointed Patriarchal Vicar for Hebrew-speaking Catholics by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal . In August 2017, he asked Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa to be released from this task.

Since July 2019 he has been the regional superior of the Jesuits in the Holy Land.
