David Patrick Russell

David Patrick Hamilton Russell (born November 6, 1938 - August 17, 2014 in Cape Town ) was a South African Anglican bishop and anti- apartheid activist .

Life

Russell studied at the University of Cape Town , where he received a bachelor's degree , and then at the University of Oxford . After completing his master’s degree there, he trained as a priest at the College of the Resurrection in Mirfield and obtained a doctorate in religious studies with a focus on Christian ethics in Cape Town. In 1965 he was ordained and a chaplain .

In 1977 Russell was placed under house arrest for five years for his work with migrants . After resisting house arrest in 1980 and attending an Anglican synod , he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and suspended from office for two and a half years. He was supposed to be serving in Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town , but was released on bail on appeal from his lawyer . 1986/87 he was a suffragan bishop , from 1987 to the 12th Bishop of Grahamstown , from 1986 to 2004 he was a member of the Bishops' Conference of South Africa. In 2000 he was elected Dean of the Ecclesiastical Province of South Africa. After his retirement in 2004, Russell worked for a Christian non-governmental organization .

Russell was married and had two sons.

Awards

Russell received the Order of the Baobab in silver from President Jacob Zuma in 2011 .
