David Rudman

David Rudman or Dawid Rudman (born on April 13, 1943 in Kuibyshev ) is a former Soviet judoka and samboka who became a sambo trainer and functionary after his active career.

Athletic career

David Rudman fought in the weight class up to 70 kilograms. In judo he won the European Championships in 1969 in Ostend, where he defeated Antoni Zajkowski from Poland in the final . At the 1969 World Championships in Mexico City, he defeated Zajkowski in the quarterfinals, but then lost to the Japanese Yoshimitsu Kōno in the pool finals and Hiroshi Minatoya in the fight for the finals. In the battle for a bronze medal, he defeated the South Korean Chang In-kwon .

Rudman was the Soviet master in sambo from 1965 to 1969. In 1967 he won the first international sambo tournament. 1970 to 1972 he finished second at the Soviet championships, in 1973 he won the title again. At the Sambo World Championships in 1973 he won the title in the weight class up to 68 kilograms.

After his active career, Rudman was a trainer and authored several books on sambo. In 2005 Rudman, now living in the United States, became President of the Fédération Internationale de Sambo (FIAS). In 2007 he was made honorary president.
