David Shifrin

David Shifrin (born January 2, 1950 in New York City ) is an American clarinetist and music teacher.

Shifrin attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York and studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan from 1965 to 1967 and at the Curtis Institute until 1973 . He then played clarinet in several well-known American orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra , the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra . In 1989 he became a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center , of which he was artistic director from 1993 to 2004.

As a soloist, Shifrin has made recordings for Delos, DGG, Angel / EMI, Arabesque, BMG, SONY and CRI labels, some of which have been nominated for a Grammy , including Claude Debussy's collection of chamber music with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center , the Clarinet Concerto by Aaron Copland and Maurice Ravel's Introduction and Allegro (with Nancy Allen , Ransom Wilson and the Tokyo String Quartet ). He was also awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant (1987) from the National Endowment for the Arts . Shifrin is particularly dedicated to the compositions of 20th and 21st century American composers such as John Adams , Joan Tower , Stephen Albert , Bruce Adolphe , Ezra Laderman , Lalo Schifrin , David Schiff , John Corigliano , Bright Sheng and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich .

As a clarinet teacher Shifrin worked at the University of Hawaii , the Cleveland Institute of Music (1974-76), the University of Michigan (until 1982), the University of Southern California and the Juilliard School of Music . Since 1987 he has been a professor at Yale University and artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Yale .
