David V. Goeddel

David VanNorman Goeddel (born May 3, 1951 in Pasadena , California ) is an American biochemist and biotechnology entrepreneur.

Goeddel holds a BA in Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. in biochemistry .

Goeddel was the first scientist to be hired by the biotechnology company Genentech in 1978 . Goeddel stayed at Genentech until 1993, where he held various positions, most recently that of Director of Molecular Biology . In 1991 Goeddel was one of the founders of the biotechnology company Tularik , where he served as Vice President for Research until 1996, then as Chief Executive Officer until 2004 , before Tularik was sold to Amgen for 1.3 billion US dollars , where Goeddel again until 2006 served as Senior Scientific Vice President .

With his fundamental work on the cloning and expression of genes, Goeddel contributed significantly to the development of genetically engineered drugs such as human insulin , somatropin , interferon-alpha , interferon-gamma or tissue-specific plasminogen activator at Genentech .

Currently (as of 2016) Goeddel holds a leading position at The Column Group , a venture capital company in the biotechnology industry with a focus on new (pharmacological) therapies.
