Dawid Kostecki (pseudonym: Cygan (Gypsy); born June 27, 1981 in Rzeszów ; † August 2, 2019 ) was a Polish light heavyweight professional boxer. He belonged to the Roma population .
Boxing career
In interviews, Kostecki told of a difficult childhood and a year in prison. Then he chose the path of boxing .
After 13 wins, 11 of which by knockout, he boxed for the WBC youth world championship on September 25, 2004 . He won against his opponent Gasper Mathew (5-2), by tKo in the fifth round. He then defended the title against Dhafir Smith (13-6), Mukadi Shambuyi (15-0) and Joseph Marwa (17-6).
On October 15, 2005 he won the World Cup title of the WBF with a points win against Ismail Abdoul (25-8) . In January 2006 he beat the Egyptian Richard Nwoba (8-0) in the second round knockout.
On May 6, 2006 he suffered the first defeat of his professional career; he was defeated by the Frenchman Rachid Kanfouah (25-5) by knockout in the ninth round, but had his opponent on the ground in the second round.
On September 14, 2008 he beat the Brazilian Marcelo Leandro Da Silva (16-0) in the first round knockout, and in October 2009 he defeated his compatriot Grzegorz Soszyński (16-0) unanimously on points.
On February 6, 2010 he secured the IBC World Championship title with a tKo victory in round 7 against Dario Cichello (18-6) . On April 24 of the same year he was also able to win a WBF title again when he defeated Giulian Ilie (15-3) on points.
On October 23, 2010 he became the Baltic Champion of the WBC. He defeated Sean Corbin (14-2) prematurely. On June 25, 2011 he also won the intercontinental championship of the WBA by winning points against Lolenga Mock (30-12) . He defended these two titles in December by knockout in the fourth round against Byron Mitchell (29-8).
A fight against Roy Jones junior planned for June 30, 2012 had to be canceled because Kostecki was found guilty of promoting illegal prostitution as the head of a nationwide organization . He was also charged with drug possession offenses. After several years in prison, he committed suicide in prison.
Kostecki was married and had two children.
