Dawit Kandelaki

Dawit Kandelaki ( Georgian დავით კანდელაკი ; Russian Давид Владимирович Канделаки , Dawid Vladimirovich Kandelaki ; * October 1895 in Kulaschi near Kutaisi ; † July 29, 1938 in Kommunarka near Moscow ) was a Soviet politician and diplomat .

Life

Kandelaki came from a Georgian noble family. He became a member of the Social Revolutionary Party in 1912 and a member of the KPR (B) in 1918 . From 1921 to 1930 he was People's Commissar for Education in Georgia . From 1930 to December 1934 he headed the Soviet trade agency in Stockholm .

Kandelaki carried out special tasks in foreign policy on Stalin's behalf. From December 1934 to April 1937 he was head of the Soviet trade agency in Berlin . In 1936 he tried to sound out the possibilities for an agreement between Hitler and Stalin. In April 1937 he was recalled to Moscow and appointed Deputy People's Commissar for Foreign Trade. Kandelaki was arrested on September 11, 1937 and shot on July 29, 1938. His family was banished.

Kandelaki was rehabilitated on May 26, 1956 .

Awards

  • On July 10, 1935, Kandelaki was awarded the Order of Lenin for his excellent service in the field of foreign trade .
