Daz studio

DAZ Studio is a 3D modeling tool offered by DAZ Productions ( DAZ stands for Digital Art Zone ) that is particularly suitable for positioning and displaying 3D models of people.

DAZ Studio has a similar application area as Poser . In DAZ Studio rendering effects are possible, such as depth of field (depth of field) and motion blur (motion blur). It also enables the creation of shadows either by ray tracing or by so-called depth shadow maps . For faster rendering it is possible to work with OpenGL , but the subtleties of textures such as bump mapping , displacement mapping or reflections are not taken into account.

DAZ Studio comes with a built-in Python engine, with the help of which, as with the integrated plug-in interface, the range of functions of the program can be greatly expanded.

The version DAZ Studio 1.0 was published in autumn 2005. Version 2.0 was announced for July 2007, but did not appear until the beginning of March 2008. Version 2.0 contains new functions such as the automatic creation of approximately lip-synchronous animations or the possibility of subsequently increasing the polygons of the figures by additional subdivision, which means that the Figures appear more detailed.

Version 3.0 was released in mid-June 2009 and has some improvements. Among other things, the rendering engine has been improved, the options for creating different textures have been expanded and some modules that had to be purchased in earlier versions are now integrated into the software (albeit to a limited extent).

Three significantly expanded versions 4.0 ( DAZ Studio , ADVANCED , PRO ) have been available since mid-2011 . The basic version DAZ Studio is offered free of charge. DAZ Studio Pro has also been free of charge since February 1, 2017.

Modeling of figures

The main purpose of DAZ Studio is to quickly pose ready-made objects and figures and to arrange them into a finished picture. DAZ Studio is aimed at artists who do not follow the relatively steep learning curve of professional 3D editing, but want to work intuitively and see quick results. A variety of figures and other accessories are available for the DAZ Studio library from both the manufacturer and third parties.

DAZ Studio and Poser

DAZ Studio does not offer all the features of its original Poser . For example, the physical simulations available in Poser are missing, for example to collide clothes or hair with other objects or to have them moved by a simulated wind.

DAZ Studio is the largest third party supplier of figures for Poser software . His character Victoria is one of the most popular characters. According to some users, the DAZ Studio interface is much more intuitive and pleasant to use than the Poser interface, which takes a bit of getting used to and is sometimes inflexible . In addition, its installation does not depend on Adobe Flash, which has data protection problems .

reception

  • In a report in c't issue 16/2011 it is positively assessed that DAZ Studio reacts “lightning-fast to changes in parameters and numerical inputs”. The rendering process is rated negatively.
  • chip.de rated the program as “first-class rendering software”, but criticized the fact that no 3D objects could be created, so that blenders were required for this.
  • Netzwelt emphasizes "the simple user guidance", which makes "entry easy for beginners", but criticizes that "no new models can be created and additional expansions are chargeable".
