De Nachtegaal is a visitor and nature education center in the municipality of De Panne , located in the far west of the Belgian North Sea coast . About a third of the Belgian dune landscape lies in the municipality . The ecologically valuable areas include De Westhoek (German: The West Corner ), with its more than 500 plant species, and Oosthoekduinen (38 hectares), which are also designated as nature reserves . There are also the Krakeelduinen , the Houtsaegerduinen and the dune forests Kerkepannebos (86 hectares) and Calmeynbos (66 hectares). In Adinkerke there are the 5000 year old fossil dunes, the Cabourduinen . The nature museum and visitor center De Nachtegaal is located between the Calmeynbos dune forest and the Oosthoek nature reserve.

In its building, the visitor center offers a small natural history museum with a large number of exhibits and instructive, multilingual explanations and diagrams on the dynamics and geology of the natural area of ​​the North Sea coast, the coastal sea and its inhabitants, as well as the flora and fauna of the beach , young dune belt, old dunes, Dune forest, its human use and nature protection .

Multilingual documentary and educational films and a media library are also on offer.

Museum education

The area of ​​education and museum education is also the responsibility of the institution. The nature and environmental educators are provided by the NME cell from the Department of Environment, Nature and Energy.

  • There is a children's route through the museum for smaller children
  • Routes 10, 27 and 54 for each children of the first, second or third class of the classes are for groups and primary school offered
  • Schools and families can borrow educational material such as the Grenzpfad backpack (Grenspad-rugzak) or the Brachpieper backpack (Duinpieper-rugzak)
  • Environmental educational packages can be purchased in the shop
