history

In the early 19th century, Petrus Johannes Meiring, a young man from Worcester near Cape Town , moved to the Little Karoo . He was a grandson of Pastor Arnoldus Meiring from Lingen (Ems) , who immigrated to South Africa in 1743.

He discovered the path through the Swartberg Mountains, the Meiringspoort Pass. It was the first pass to connect the Little Karoo with the Great Karoo here, and was completed in 1858.

Long before the place was founded, De Rust was already known as a resting place after the difficult pass crossing. De Rust was founded in 1900 on part of the Meirings family farm.
